Dentures Q & A

What is the difference between a full denture and a partial denture?

Full dentures are used to replace all the teeth while a partial denture is used to replace one or several teeth. Both full dentures and partial dentures feature advanced design and state-of-the-art materials for a comfortable fit and attractive appearance to help men and women feel more confident about their appearance following tooth loss.

How are dentures fitted?

Fittings begin with impressions or molds of the mouth which are then sent to a leading dental lab where the dentures will be carefully crafted out of the most advanced materials for durable yet lightweight construction and a comfortable custom fit. Once the dentures are finished, they’re carefully fitted and adjusted in the office so they feel comfortable during wear.

How long does it take to get used to wearing dentures?

That depends on how many teeth are being replaced and whether the patient has ever worn dentures in the past. Generally speaking, smaller partial dentures are easier to get used to, and patients with experience wearing dentures also tend to feel comfortable faster when receiving new or more extensive dentures. To “speed up” the breaking-in process and adjust more quickly to new dentures, patients are advised to practice reading aloud so they become used to the way the dentures feel. Eating a variety of foods at home before going out for social events can also help. If the dentures cause sore spots, it’s very important to come back to the office to have them adjusted to improve comfort and prevent potential infections.

Are dentures difficult to care for?

No, dentures can be cared for with brushing and soaking to keep them fresh and clean. It’s also important to see the dentist regularly even if all natural teeth have been replaced to ensure the gums remain healthy and to have routine oral cancer screenings. Regular dental appointments also ensure the dentures fit properly so sore spots and embarrassing slippage can be prevented.
