Zoom Whitening Q & A
What causes teeth to become discolored and dingy?
Teeth can become yellowed and discolored for different reasons, but the most common causes of tooth discoloration are tobacco products and foods and beverages that contain dark pigments, including coffee, tea, red wine, dark berries and some spices, as well as natural and artificial food colorings. Foods and beverages high in acids can also contribute to tooth yellowing by temporarily softening enamel so stains can penetrate more easily. These types of discoloration and staining can be effectively treated with in-office whitening procedures. Discoloration in the deeper portions of the teeth can be caused by illness, decay, and other tooth damage, or long-term use of some medications. Deeper discoloration may require caps or veneers to correct.
How does Zoom whitening work?
Zoom whitening uses a special whitening gel combined with activating light to penetrate deeper into the tooth surface, eliminating stains and helping teeth look up to eight shades whiter in just a single, one-hour treatment session. During the whitening procedure, a special guard is used to hold the lips back from the teeth so the light can reach the tooth surfaces and the gel won’t be washed away. The gel is applied to each visible tooth surface before the light is applied. The gel may be reapplied several times during treatment to ensure adequate penetration and consistent results. Teeth whitening is usually completed following a cleaning to ensure the best results.
Is Zoom teeth whitening safe?
Yes, the Zoom system is approved for professional application to help whiten and brighten teeth.
Will teeth whitening make my teeth sensitive?
Some patients may experience an increase in tooth sensitivity which will resolve soon after treatment is complete.
Is professional teeth whitening better than the bleaching kits I can buy in the store?
Absolutely. Professional teeth whitening is a custom treatment designed to be completed in just one hour and offering results that are more consistent and longer lasting than over-the-counter teeth bleaching kits. Plus, because in-office teeth whitening is overseen by a dentist, it can be a much safer and more effective alternative.
